Main economic and cultural center of the greater Milwaukee-Racine-Waukesha Metro area, Milwaukee is home to over 500,000 residents and offers much for the resident and visitor to do and see year round. Milwaukee’s history dates back the year 1846 when three smaller towns in the area, merged to create the city. In the 1840’s, an influx of immigrants found themselves settling the area and eventually, this growth as well as the growth of industry led to Milwaukee becoming one of the powerhouses of the region.
Today, despite the lack of industry in the area, the city and metro area continues to thrive. Today, less industry has not made the city suffer, but has caused it to find other ways to thrive and today is home to many international headquarters for fortune 500 companies as well as being home to many financial services and home to headquarters for many other large U.S. companies. Tourism is also popular in the area with the Miller Brewery, as well as sports venues and Lake Michigan. Popular tourist activities aside from the regular historical tourism, cultural tourism and the like also includes sailing, windsurfing and even kitesurfing during the warmer months.
Diversity is part of the charm of Milwaukee as well as part of the draw. With diverse cultures comes diverse activities and foods. In fact, many foodies consider Milwaukee a great place to tempt their palette. In addition, a number of museums, and a host of annual festivals also keep millions coming to the area year after year.
Nicknamed the City of Festivals, Milwaukee is home to the Wisconsin State Fair, Summerfest, Trainfest and festivals for every background and interest including Polish Fest, Bastille Days and German Fest, to name a few.
It is good to note that as a metropolitan area, many smaller communities including Waukesha and Pewaukee are located nearby and will offer visitors and small town feel and smaller town prices when visiting the larger city of Milwaukee. Take advantage of small towns in metro areas to enjoy a quieter and slower paced vacation with all the benefits of a big city vacation.
